For those who haven't found their lifelong work yet, burnout is real. That makes breaks necessary. How to take breaks in a way that doesn't put the rest of your day's work at the mercy of your willpower is a challenge I've faced.

After digging through 10 behavioural science studies, I've consolidated 3 things that separate taking a break and chud-maxxing.

You take a break when you're tired. You chud-max when the work is hard.

A break should never be an escape from work when it becomes challenging.
Caveat: When "hard" and "tiring" are the same thing, e.g. when you're exercising.

A break has a clear end.

If it spirals into another break, then another, then it becomes chud-maxxing. The "end" also needs to be enforceable. Therefore, a timer is a bad idea if you're doing anything where "one more" is trivial. This is why scrolling reels as a break is better when you are held accountable by something, like a meeting, rather than when you're doing a personal project on a Saturday afternoon.

You know exactly what to do when you finish the break

The first 5 mins to start work is usually the hardest. So if there's nothing for you to pick up momentum, your inertia is just going to carry you to another activity that feels productive but isn't really important. E.g. Reel break leading to scrolling emails or Slack.

Strategies I'm Testing:

Writing down by hand the immediate next step before I take the break, and put it somewhere obvious.

Putting my roommates to good use as enforcers of a break.

Adjusting break activity and duration based on the toughness of the previous work.
